# Sending a Portal Invite

> How to give a client access to their secure Matter Vault portal.

Each matter has a client portal — a private, secure page where your client can view documents you have shared, upload files, and receive updates. Access is granted by sending a portal invite.

## Before you send an invite

The client must already be added to the matter as a contact. If they are not on the matter yet, add them first via the **Parties** tab.

## How to send an invite

1. Open the matter
2. Go to the **Portal** tab
3. Find the client in the contact list and click **Send Invite**

The client receives an email with a secure link. The link is unique to that client and that matter — it cannot be used to access any other matter.

## How the link works

The portal link does not require a password. Clicking it signs the client in automatically for that session. Links are valid for 7 days. If a client's link expires, send a new one from the Portal tab — this takes a few seconds and immediately revokes the old link.

## Who can receive a portal invite

Any contact on the matter can receive a portal invite. You are not limited to one client per matter. If a matter has multiple clients or authorized family members, each person gets their own unique link.

## What happens after you send the invite

The client appears in the Portal tab with a status of **Invited**. Once they click their link and access the portal for the first time, the status updates to **Active**.
