# Document AI Analysis

> How Matter Vault automatically analyzes documents after they are uploaded.

When a document enters Matter Vault, the system can automatically analyze it in the background using AI. This is optional and controlled per matter.

## What the AI extracts

For each document, the pipeline extracts:

* **Title** — a human-readable name based on the document content, used if you have not set a custom title
* **Category** — the document type (for example: Medical Record, Contract, Court Filing)
* **Summary** — a short description of what the document contains
* **Tags** — people, organizations, and key topics mentioned in the document

These appear in the document panel once analysis is complete.

## Enabling AI analysis

AI analysis is off by default for every new matter. To enable it:

1. Open the matter
2. Go to the Settings tab
3. Turn on **Auto-analyze documents with AI**

Once enabled, all future uploads into that matter are analyzed automatically. Existing documents are not analyzed retroactively — use the **Analyze document** button in the document panel to run analysis on individual files.

## Running analysis manually

Any document can be analyzed on demand regardless of the matter setting. Open the document panel and click **Analyze document**. This works even if the matter has AI analysis turned off.

## What the AI does not do

The AI extracts information from documents — it does not make legal judgments. All output is labeled as AI-generated and must be reviewed by a licensed attorney before relying on it.

<Note>
Client portal uploads are not analyzed automatically even if AI is enabled for the matter. An attorney must review and promote the document first.
