# Email

> Per-matter email, sending, and routing inbound messages.

Email in Matter Vault is organized by matter. Each matter keeps its own thread of communications, so the email about a case lives with the case rather than scattered across inboxes.

## The Matter Inbox

Inside a matter's **Communication** tab you will find two streams — **Matter email** and **Portal comments**. Inbound email is matched to the right matter automatically through a Gmail label, and anything that cannot be matched goes to the Unrouted Inbox (below). Outbound messages are recorded on the matter as part of its communications history.

## Sending

    Fill in the recipient, subject, message, and any attachments.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose how it goes out" icon="paper-plane">
    You can send directly from the app, mark a message as one you will send yourself, or save it as a Gmail draft if Gmail is connected.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The from-address is your firm's verified sending address, and a professional footer — your name and title, bar admissions, and firm details — is added automatically.

## The Unrouted Inbox

The **Unrouted Inbox** collects inbound emails that could not be matched to a matter, so nothing gets lost. It is available to admins, attorneys, paralegals, and legal secretaries.
