# Medical Overview

> The provider spine — where every treating provider, bill, and record lives.

The **Medical** tab is built around the **provider** — every doctor, clinic, and hospital that treated your client. Each provider holds its own bills and records, and the case's medical specials total up from there. When a case has more than one client, a switcher at the top filters everything to the claimant you're looking at.

## The Provider List

Providers are listed with their record status, total billed, and outstanding balance. A **Lien** badge appears when any of a provider's bills are on a lien. At the top sit two actions — **Generate blank HIPAA**, which downloads a blank authorization, and **+ Add Provider**.

A totals footer — **Medical Specials** — sums the case's billed, paid, and balance, plus a future-care estimate when you've recorded one. This is the number that becomes your damages.

## Adding a Provider

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the form">
    Click **+ Add Provider**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the provider">
    Search your medical facilities, or type a new name to create one. A provider is an organization.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Record the details">
    Specialty, NPI, a standard reduction percentage, and per-case notes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    The provider appears on the spine, ready for bills and records.
  </Step>
</Steps>

A provider can exist with no bills yet — useful when records arrive before any billing. You can only delete a provider once its bills are removed.

## Two Levels: the Spine and the Workspace

The Medical tab shows every provider at a glance and lets you expand one to peek at its bills. For real work on a provider — adding bills, recording payments, negotiating reductions, chasing records — you open its full **provider workspace** (covered next). Think of the spine as the index and the workspace as the desk.

## A Note on Liens

Case-level liens don't live here anymore — they live on the **Settlement** tab, where they feed the disbursement waterfall. A **Manage liens** button takes you there. The only lien setting on Medical is the per-bill "on lien" flag.
