Matter Vault tracks deadlines at both the matter level and the firm level. Statute of limitations deadlines are created automatically — manual deadlines can be added at any time.

Automatic SOL deadline

For PI cases, the statute of limitations deadline is calculated automatically the moment a date of loss is entered. Matter Vault uses Nevada’s standard SOL window (2 years / 730 days) and creates a deadline record without any manual entry. The SOL deadline appears:
  • In the matter’s Deadlines tab
  • As a countdown in the case overview header (amber when within 90 days, red when within 30 days)
  • On the firm-wide Deadlines page
If the date of loss is changed after case creation, the SOL deadline updates automatically to match.

Other auto-created deadlines

In addition to the SOL, Matter Vault automatically creates deadlines when certain case milestones occur:
TriggerDeadline created
Date of loss setStatute of limitations
Demand letter sentInsurance response deadline
Treatment end date setMedical records request deadline
These deadlines appear in the Deadlines tab labeled as system-derived. They can be edited but not deleted.

Adding a manual deadline

  1. Go to the matter’s Deadlines tab
  2. Click + Add Deadline
  3. Fill in the deadline name, date, and any notes
  4. Click Save
Manual deadlines appear alongside auto-created ones in the same list.

The firm-wide Deadlines page

The Deadlines page in the main sidebar shows all deadlines across all matters your team has access to. Use it for a daily or weekly review of upcoming dates. Deadlines are color-coded by urgency:
  • Red — within 30 days or past due
  • Amber — within 90 days
  • Standard — more than 90 days out

SOL alerts on the dashboard

The dashboard shows a critical alert banner if any matter has an SOL deadline within 7 days. This banner cannot be dismissed — it stays visible until the deadline passes or the matter is closed.

Deadlines tab on PI cases

PI cases have their own Deadlines tab in the case rail. It shows all deadlines scoped to that case, including SOL, lien negotiation response deadlines, and any manual deadlines added by your team.
