The Documents tab is the central hub for all files attached to a matter. Every document — regardless of how it entered the system — appears here with its metadata, AI analysis results, and chain-of-custody history.

Uploading a document

  1. Go to the matter’s Documents tab
  2. Click + Add Document
  3. Choose how to add the file:

  1. Optionally toggle Analyze with AI — defaults to the matter’s AI mode setting
  2. Click Add Document
The file is integrity-verified on upload. If anything went wrong during the transfer it is rejected automatically.

Syncing from Google Drive

If documents already exist in the matter’s Drive folder — for example files added directly by a team member — use Sync from Drive to import them into Matter Vault.
  1. Click Sync from Drive in the Documents tab toolbar
  2. Browse the matter’s Drive folder structure
  3. Select the files or folders to import
  4. Choose whether to run AI analysis on the imported batch
  5. Click Sync
Synced files get full chain-of-custody tracking from the moment they enter Matter Vault.

Searching and filtering

The Documents tab has a search bar and several filters to help you find files quickly.

The document panel

Click any document row to open the document panel on the right. The panel has three tabs: Details
  • File name, display name, category, tags
  • Privilege and confidentiality flags
  • Review notes added by the attorney
AI Summary
  • AI-generated summary, category, and tags
  • Pipeline status (Pending, Running, Complete, Skipped, Error)
  • Analyze document button — runs analysis on demand regardless of matter AI mode
Custody
  • Full chain-of-custody log showing every event: uploaded, reviewed, analyzed, included in production

Editing a document

From the document panel you can:
  • Edit the display name (overrides the AI-generated title)
  • Set or change the category
  • Mark as privileged or confidential
  • Add review notes
  • Add or remove tags
Click Save to apply changes.

Bulk actions

To act on multiple documents at once:
  1. Hover over any document row — a checkbox appears on the left
  2. Check the boxes for the documents you want
  3. An action bar appears at the bottom of the panel
  4. Choose Delete to remove the selected documents
Deleted documents are removed from Matter Vault and from Google Drive.

Downloading a document

Click the download icon on any document row to download the file directly from Google Drive to your computer.

AI pipeline status

Each document row shows a status badge indicating where the document is in the AI pipeline:
