Overview
Quick Notes lets you capture a note from anywhere in Matter Vault — without navigating away, without losing context. Open it the moment a client calls, type while you pull up their case, and save when you’re done. The note panel stays open as you navigate through the app and your draft is never lost.
Notes link directly to PI cases or Matter Vault matters and appear in the Notes tab on the case or matter page. Unlinked notes go to a queue at /quick-notes to be filed later.
Opening Quick Notes
| Method | Action |
|---|
| Keyboard shortcut | Ctrl+. on Windows, Linux, and macOS |
| FAB button | Gold pen icon in the bottom-right corner of any page |
The panel slides in from the right. The page behind stays fully interactive — you can click sidebar links, scroll, and navigate while the panel is open.
The panel
Subject of Note
Search for a PI case or Matter Vault matter to link the note to. Type to search — results appear after a short delay showing both PI cases and MV matters in the same list. Each result shows the name, number, and a PI or MV badge.
- Linking is optional — leave blank to save as unassigned
- Once a case or matter is selected, a Jump to Case link appears inline — click it to navigate there while keeping your note open
- Unassigned notes appear at
/quick-notes and can be filed to a case later
Pre-consultation
Check Pre-consultation to flag the note as a call that happened before a case was opened. Useful for intake calls, referral conversations, or any contact that doesn’t have a file yet. The note saves as intentionally unlinked — separate from notes that were simply forgotten.
Note
Free-text area. Auto-focuses when the panel opens so you can start typing immediately. The timestamp at the top records when the panel was opened.
Saving and discarding
| Action | Behavior |
|---|
| Save Note | Saves the note. Disabled until you type something. |
| Discard | Closes the panel. Prompts for confirmation if you’ve typed anything. |
Escape | Same as Discard. |
Where notes appear
| Note type | Where it appears |
|---|
| Linked to a PI case | Notes tab on that PI case |
| Linked to an MV matter | Notes tab on that matter |
| Unassigned or pre-consultation | /quick-notes unassigned queue |
On the Notes tab, each note shows its timestamp, a Quick Note or AutoNoteTaker source badge, a Pre-Consult badge if applicable, and the full note body.
Typical phone-call workflow
- Client calls — press
Ctrl+. to open the panel instantly
- Start typing while you say “one sec, let me pull up your file”
- Search for their case in the Subject field and select it
- Click Jump to Case to navigate to their case detail — note stays open
- Read facts from the case while continuing to type
- Click Save Note — note files to the case and appears in the Notes tab
Keyboard shortcut note
Ctrl+. works in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge on Windows, Linux, and macOS. The shortcut uses the Ctrl key on all platforms — not Cmd on Mac.
Chrome on macOS intercepts Cmd+Shift+N for new incognito windows at the browser level, which is why Matter Vault uses Ctrl+. instead — it works reliably across all browsers and platforms.
