The Documents tab — files organized by category
At a Glance
Category, Not Folders
Files are organized by category, with flat and grouped views.
Your Own Drive
File contents live in your firm’s Google Drive, not our servers.
Metadata Only
Matter Vault stores the details about each file and a pointer to it.
Upload Flow
Pick a category, add files, and choose whether AI processing runs.
The Documents Tab
The Documents tab lists everything filed on that matter or case. You can view it as a flat list — file name, processing status, category, who uploaded it, and a download link — or switch to a grouped view that stacks documents under their category headings with a count for each. The document categories
The document categories
Documents are sorted into categories such as Court Order, Motion / Brief, Deposition, Financial Disclosure, Expert Report, Correspondence, Contract / Agreement, and Evidence / Exhibit, with Other as a catch-all.
How Google Drive Fits In
Where files actually live
Where files actually live
Your documents live in your firm’s own Google Drive. When you upload a file, it is moved into the matter’s Drive folder, and each category maps to a named subfolder there — so the structure you see in the app matches what you would see in Drive.
What Matter Vault stores
What Matter Vault stores
Matter Vault itself stores only the details about each file — its name, category, size, who uploaded it, and a pointer to the file in your Drive. We never hold the document contents. When you download, the file streams straight from your Drive. This is what the login screen means by “Files stay in your firm’s own Drive.”
Adding a Document
Open the uploader
Click Upload on the Documents tab.
Pick a category
A category is required. For medical records, fill in the extra record details — record type, service dates, physician, provider, and which party it belongs to.
Choose files and options
Choose one or more files (you will see progress for each), optionally add notes, and choose whether AI processing runs on each file.
