Email in Matter Vault is organized by matter. Each matter keeps its own thread of communications, so the email about a case lives with the case rather than scattered across inboxes.

Per-Matter Email

Each matter keeps its own thread of communications.

Automatic Routing

Inbound email is matched to the right matter by a Gmail label.

Sending

Compose from the app, with your firm’s address and a footer added.

Unrouted Inbox

A safety net for inbound mail that couldn’t be matched.

The Matter Inbox

Inside a matter’s Communication tab you will find two streams — Matter email and Portal comments. Inbound email is matched to the right matter automatically through a Gmail label, and anything that cannot be matched goes to the Unrouted Inbox (below). Outbound messages are recorded on the matter as part of its communications history.

Sending

Open the compose drawer

Fill in the recipient, subject, message, and any attachments.

Choose how it goes out

You can send directly from the app, mark a message as one you will send yourself, or save it as a Gmail draft if Gmail is connected.
The from-address is your firm’s verified sending address, and a professional footer — your name and title, bar admissions, and firm details — is added automatically.

The Unrouted Inbox

The Unrouted Inbox collects inbound emails that could not be matched to a matter, so nothing gets lost. It is available to admins, attorneys, paralegals, and legal secretaries.

From here you route each message to the right matter (optionally tying it to a deadline), which files its attachments as case documents with custody recorded, or you dismiss it as spam.
